Fairfax Speeding Ticket Lawyer
A speeding ticket looks like a fine you pay and forget. Often it is not. Va. Code § 46.2-870 sets the limits, and what follows a conviction reaches your insurance, your license and sometimes your job.
If you have a summons for Fairfax or anywhere in Virginia, it is worth a phone call before you decide to just pay it.

What looks small on paper.
Paying the ticket is a guilty plea. It goes on your record, the points follow, and the consequences arrive months later when you are no longer thinking about the stop.
Most people only find out what it cost them at renewal.
- Points on your record. Even one ticket adds them, and insurers price accordingly.
- A license problem. Points accumulate. Enough of them and Virginia suspends you.
- An employment problem. If you drive for a living, a conviction can put your commercial license at risk.
- A criminal charge. At 20 over, or at 85 mph and above, it stops being a ticket and becomes reckless driving.
The reading is evidence. Evidence can be wrong.
A speed reading feels final when you are standing at the roadside. In a courtroom it is a piece of evidence like any other, produced by a device that has to be calibrated and operated correctly.
The measurement
Radar and lidar have to be calibrated on a schedule and used properly. Certificates expire. Operators make mistakes. I check.
The paperwork
Summonses have errors in them. So do officer notes. A procedural problem at the stop can matter more than the number on the ticket.
The negotiation
Where the reading holds up, the question becomes what the charge is reduced to. A lesser offense, a lower fine, or driver improvement school instead of points.
Do not ignore it.
A summons in a drawer does not go away. Missing your court date can add fines, suspend your license, and depending on the charge and the state, create additional consequences.
And do not just prepay it to make it go away. Prepayment is an admission of guilt. It goes on your record. One speeding ticket, even if it is not charged as reckless, can alone be six points depending on the speed. In Virginia, 12 points in 12 months triggers DMV action — and that can lead to a suspension here that follows you to your home state license even if you are not a Virginia resident.
If the date is close and you have not dealt with it, that is the call to make today.

Can I fight a ticket without a lawyer?
You can. People do it every day. Whether it is worth doing alone depends on what is at stake — your points balance, your job, and whether the charge is close to the reckless driving threshold.
What happens if I just pay it?
Paying is pleading guilty. The conviction and the points go on your record, and you lose the chance to have the charge reduced.
At what speed does it stop being a ticket?
20 mph or more over the limit, or 85 mph and above regardless of the limit. At that point it is reckless driving, which is a criminal charge, not a traffic one.
Will my insurance find out?
Almost certainly, at renewal. A conviction on your record is visible to insurers and they price it in.
I live in another state. Does it still matter?
Yes. Virginia convictions are reported, and most states will apply their own points to your home license.
Can the charge be reduced?
Often. Depending on the facts, that can mean a lesser offense, a smaller fine, or driver improvement school in place of points.
If it is more than a ticket
At 20 over or 85 and above, you are looking at reckless driving in Virginia. Even if it is not charged as reckless, a high-speed ticket is six points on your record — and that alone can trigger DMV action.
