In my article for Virginia Lawyers Magazine, “When Advocacy Met Empathy in Courtroom 1: The Power of Telling a Narrative,” published in Virginia Lawyer’s Magazine, I share the story of “Farishta,” a struggling young mother of four facing charges related to theft of basic necessities from Walmart and facing possible deportation. Through her account, I illustrate the impact of storytelling as an effective tool in her defense, which eventually led to the dismissal of all charges. This article honors the resilience of individuals like her and also pays tribute to the unyielding dedication of our public defenders, zealous advocates for Farishtas, every single day, as well as those tremendous prosecutors who approach their role with humanity and a willingness to listen to and consider better approaches, embodying the highest values of their office, including empathy, fairness, compassion, and a commitment to justice.
